A select group gathered at the Dutch Courage last night for the inaugural meeting of It’s All About the Book bookclub.

The book was generally received favourably although there were two dissenters (via email and telephone) who found a) the book did not live up to its early amusement and b) it was boring from start to finish.

Those members of the club who were physically present were reminded of Terry Prachett's fantasy work, Woody Allen's Zeilig, Peter Sellers' character, Chauncy Gardner, and Tom Hanks' Forrest Gump - and the possibility of a drunken bet to link as many improbable meetings and historical facts as possible, with an elephant.

The fact that the novel was a debut for the author was conceded as marks in its favour.

Are you already in a bookclub?

You may feel that you cannot commit to another bookclub because you are already a member of one (or two!)

We’d still love you to join us just as a Newsletter subscriber. We’d love to hear what other bookclubs are reading and what you think are the pick of the titles that we must read!

In the same way, we hope you will take away from our reviews some pearlers to share with your regular club.
